Body mass index divides weight by height squared:

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)²

For someone 1.75 m tall weighing 70 kg: 1.75² = 3.0625, and 70 ÷ 3.0625 = 22.9. The imperial variant is weight (lb) ÷ height (in)² × 703. Either way it is a screening ratio, not a verdict — it cannot tell muscle from fat and says nothing about where weight sits.
